As a roofer, I have often heard two recurring questions from my clients:
(1)What are those black streaks on my roof?
(2)Can I get rid of them?
These black streaks are Gloeocapsa magma, also known as algae.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloeocapsa_magma)Yes, algae is eating your roof. Gloeocapsa magma is the second oldest algae that we know of. It is hardy, as well as airborne, so it spreads from roof to roof just like a virus.
Now, How do I get rid of it?
At Midsouth Roofsavers, we use the method and solutions recommended by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association(ARMA).(http://www.asphaltroofing.org) We never use a pressure washer. We use a pump to gently apply our solution to your roof. You will see dramatic results in just minutes. When the next rain comes your roof will be even more beautiful.
